Review: Dark Lover - A Novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood

Title: Dark Lover - A Novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood
Author: J.R. Ward
Publisher: New American Library - A division of Penguin Group
Goodreads | Amazon

Description:
In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there's a deadly turf war going war going on between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Yet none of them relishes killing their enemies more than Wrath, the leader of the Black Dagger Brotherhood...

The only purebred vampire left on the planet, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But when one of his most trusted fighters is killed - orphaning a half-breed daughter unaware of her heritage or her fate - Wrath must usher the beautiful female into the world of the undead...

Racked by a restlessness in her body that wasn't there, Beth Randall is helpless against the dangerously sexy man who comes at night with shadows in his eyes. His tales of brotherhood and blood frighten her. But his touch ignites a dawning hunger that threatens to consume them both...
Review:

Dark and exciting!

What a great, steamy book.  I'm so glad I followed the advise of fellow readers and picked this up! I loved the storyline and the characters. The world that Ward has created is fascinating! Scary, and yet, intriguing.

Sometimes an instant attraction between characters can seem unbelievable, but in this case it was charged and exhilarating. Was it a little (okay, a lot) crazy? Yes, but it made it all that much more exciting! This book is definitely a delve into the erotic, but it was also a satisfying love story.

I loved Beth! She's exotically beautiful and strong, yet humble and caring. Her life had been hard, with no real family around and an mediocre job. Wrath was almost an empty entity, retreating from intimate relationships. They are thrown together by forces outside of their control, and the result is invigorating.

There were so many other great characters in this vampire world! The Black Dagger Brotherhood is a group of male vampires who are in a constant battle with those who are out so destroy vampire kind. They are frightening and complex. The other books in the series will alternate between the other characters, and I'm really looking forward to getting to know them all personally!

There are 9 published books in this series so far:
Dark Lover
Lover Eternal
Lover Awakened
Lover Revealed
Lover Unbound
Lover Enshrined
Lover Avenged
Lover Mine
Lover Unleashed

  1. My coworker is reading this series currently and she was telling me I need to read it. I would but I can't start a new long series, I already have over 140 on my shelf unread. If I ever get the time one year I will have to read them, I do have book 1 on my shelf :)

  2. Oh my gosh! LOL! That's a lot of unread books! Better to have too many, than not enough. :)

I really loved this book. I think you'd probably like it too, but I completely understand about starting a new series.

  3. We were just talking about the Black Dagger Brotherhood books on my goodreads discussion group. Someone was saying they are completely addictive-like Twilight for grown ups.

  4. Dark Lover is my first read of a vampire storyline. I couldn't put it down. I admit I had few expectations of a romance sort of novel and even less for a story about a group of vampires. I was shocked at the detailed world the author has created, and she presents unique attributes to her vampires that extend beyond those typically found in popular culture. Like, their preferences for vampire blood and not human blood! I ended up reading the entire series and loved every book.
