Review: Hereafter

Title: Hereafter (Hereafter #1)
Author: Tara Hudson
Publisher: Harper Teen
Goodreads | Amazon

Description (from goodreads):

Can there truly be love after death?
Drifting in the dark waters of a mysterious river, the only thing Amelia knows for sure is that she's dead. With no recollection of her past life—or her actual death—she's trapped alone in a nightmarish existence. All of this changes when she tries to rescue a boy, Joshua, from drowning in her river. As a ghost, she can do nothing but will him to live. Yet in an unforgettable moment of connection, she helps him survive.
Amelia and Joshua grow ever closer as they begin to uncover the strange circumstances of her death and the secrets of the dark river that held her captive for so long. But even while they struggle to keep their bond hidden from the living world, a frightening spirit named Eli is doing everything in his power to destroy their newfound happiness and drag Amelia back into the ghost world . . . forever.
Thrilling and evocative, with moments of pure pleasure, Hereafter is a sensation you won't want to miss.

Review:

Hereafter is a beautifully haunting and mysterious story. Tara writes with such an ethereal tone that it's easy to remember that we're not just reading about a normal girl, but a ghost.

I really adore the story line. It is like nothing that I have ever read! I loved that it was unique and I had no idea where the author could possibly take this story. It was a bit refreshing to have something so different! Most love stories have an obstacle, but this has to be the biggest one yet. How do you have a love story with a ghost? How do you have a story at all? Death is typically the end, not the beginning.

There was one thing that I didn't like: I felt like the relationship developed a little too quickly. I loved the attraction between the pair; It was electric (literally!). However, I feel like they got to a serious place too quickly. I think it could have used a bit more tension, or maybe a bit more getting to know each other. There was a part where I thought to myself  "Wait... what? Ack! No." The timing of this one thing felt off. That said, I do like them together - so much. They have a great chemistry and the tenderness between them is lovely.

It's not just a love story, though! There's much more going on with Amelia than just aimless wandering. There are forces that are out to make Amelia's predicament much worse than it already is. I know! How does it get worse than being dead, right? It can get so much worse. I really like the mystery behind it all.

Overall, I loved Hereafter! I am going to continue on with this series, without a doubt. I can't wait to see where Tara Hudson takes Amelia! There are still so many unanswered questions...

  3. Instaships turn me off, so I'm glad to have a heads up before I start it. (I have it on hold at the library.) Still, I've never read a book about ghosts so I'm curious to see how it plays out.

  5. I loved this book! One of my favorites of 2011. I have been recommending it to everyone. Great review. I thought the love angle was weird too. How exactly are they going to have any intimacy? On pins and needles, waiting to read how Hudson addresses that...
