In My Mailbox ~ April 29, 2012

In My Mailbox is a meme that is hosted by The Story SirenIt's a fun way to share what books we got for the week. They can be from publishers, the library, bought, or whatever. They don't have to be from the mailbox. Mine usually aren't!

Here are the books I got since the last IMM:

Thank you St. Martin's Press! I just finished it, so hopefully I'll get a review up this week!

Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass #1) | Sarah J. Maas
This isn't the cover; I think it's going to be revealed on Monday (so says the author on her blog)! I got this image from facebook, because I had to have something, right? I'm reading this one right now. I've just started it, but it's looking very promising!

Timepiece (Hourglass #2) | Myra McEntire
I actually haven't read the first one yet, but I do own it! So, I'm moving this series up on my to read list. :) I'm actually pretty excited to read them.

House of Night (Graphic Novel #1) | P.C. Cast and Kristen Cast
I'm interested to read this! I'm bummed I can't read it on my kindle Fire though. I'll have to see if I can get it to look good on the computer monitor.

For those of you who are fellow book bloggers, I'm sure you want to know why I'm still doing IMM. Here ya go:

So, I know that many of you have decided to stop doing IMM because of the whole plagiarizing thing that's gone down this week. Well, I haven't totally decided where I stand on the issue, and I really enjoy doing this meme, so for now I'm keeping it.

YES, I agree that Kristi was wrong to copy those other bloggers. However, she has apologized and I feel like forgiveness should be given to her. I know that I'd be angry that she stole my content, but I'd also eventually come to terms with it and forgive her.

We're all human, and we all make mistakes. She's definitely paying for it and I wouldn't want to be her this week! I'm sure most of you have seen how much backlash she's had because of it. I'm definitely disappointed that she of all people was caught doing this. I'm not defending her, but I'm not condemning her either. She cracked. I'd love to say that I've never done something that I knew was wrong, but I have. Who hasn't? What's that saying... let ye who has no sins throw the first stone? Yeah, I guess I'm just not gonna be throwing stones right now.

Review: Pure

Pure (Pure #1)
Julianna Baggott
Grand Central Publishing
Goodreads | Amazon

I received an advanced digital copy of this book for my review. This is my honest opinion.

This book is what nightmares are made of... at least my nightmares! I don't know about you, but it has always scared me that we have the technology to create weapons to decimate a good chunk of the world's population in an instant. Well, Julianna Baggot takes that idea and totally runs with it in Pure. If that weren't terrifying enough, the population that does survive the destruction has mutated, and bits and pieces of the environment have become a part of them. The main character had a doll head that has become part of her hand!

So, it sounds like this is just a horror movie turned book, but that's not really true. There was just enough fear for me going through the book that it kept me on the edge of my seat through the whole book. I really liked the storyline, and felt like it really wasn't too predictable. I mean, the genre is dystopian, so you kind of know the general idea that there is destruction and that there are bad people trying to control things, but there were surprises along the way that I didn't expect.

If you look at Goodreads you'll notice that reviews are all over the place for Pure. I think this has to do with the fact that a lot of people are probably a bit turned off by the world that Baggott has built here; It's definitely disturbing! It took me a little while to come to the decision that I liked the originality of it all. Sure, it made me uncomfortable at first, but that's what really makes it stand out. There are many, many dystopians out there, but Pure is pretty memorable.

So, all of this to say that yes, Pure is a bit odd and disturbing, but unique. I recommend giving it a try for yourself!

Review: The Immortal Rules

The Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden #1)
Julie Kagawa
Harlequin
Publish Date: April 24, 2012
I received an advanced digital copy of this book for my review. This is my honest opinion.

I know, I know... another vampire book?? But WAIT! Before you just roll your eyes and move on, I have to tell you, I really liked this book. Julie Kagawa did a fantastic job taking the idea of a vampire story and making it her own.

So, what made this one so unique? Vampire zombies! Ok, so Kagawa didn't use the word zombies per say, but that's kind of what they were. This series has so many of the things I love in a story! Vampires, zombies, genetic mutations, and strong character transformations. Oh, and I loved that the protagonist is Asian. An Asian vampire? Awesome!  I can't wait to see where Kagawa takes this story.

The only thing I don't like about this story is the fact that I have to wait until net year to read the next one! If you liked The Forest of Hands and Teeth, I think you'd also really like The Immortal Rules.

I still haven't read Kagawa's fae series, although I'm not sure why. I love faerie stories! I'll definitely be picking them up after reading this one. I'm a new Julie Kagawa fan!

In My Mailbox ~ April 1, 2012

In My Mailbox is a meme that is hosted by The Story SirenIt's a fun way to share what books we got for the week. They can be from publishers, the library, bought, or whatever. They don't have to be from the mailbox. Mine usually aren't!

Here is what I got this week :

I'm so stoked for this one! I loved the last two books, and have been dying to read this one. Thanks Kristina from Kristina's World of Books for sending it to me!! :)

Isn't the cover of this one so pretty??

I still have yet to read her fae series! The Iron King is one that I've been wanting to read for such a long time. I need to bump it up on my list!

Thanks to Grand Central and Harlequin for letting me review these last two! I was surprised that I was approved for both of them. I can't wait to read them!
